Christian Science is a Bible-based teaching established by Mary Baker Eddy
Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) discovered and founded Christian Science.
Raised in a Puritan home, she loved and studied the Bible throughout her life. Often ill growing up, she experimented unsuccessfully with multiple healthcare systems. A turning point occurred in 1866 when she had a severe fall. After three days her health was not improving, so she asked for her Bible and became completely well after reading two of Jesus’ healings. Throughout her life she’d been able to heal others, but now she began to understand the science behind the activity. Often asked how she was able to heal, Eddy explained and documented it in her primary work, Science and Health, and named her discovery Christian Science.
Eddy became a public speaker, teacher, and best-selling author. She founded a college for teaching Christian Science healing, an international church, and multiple publications, including the award-winning newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor.
Our Sunday Service is held at 11 a.m. and lasts for one hour. It includes hymn singing, scriptural readings, the Lord’s Prayer and silent prayer. Central to the Service is the weekly Bible-Lesson, consisting of Bible verses that are explained and enlarged upon by related passages from the Christian Science Text Book, Science and Health, with key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
Wednesday Evening Meetings
Our Wednesday Testimony Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 11 a.m. These hour-long meetings include hymn singing, prayer, and readings from the Bible and Science and Health. The readings are followed by a period during which the congregation is invited to share testimonies of healing, experiences and remarks on Christian Science. The emphasis throughout the meeting is on the practical application of Bible truths in everyday life. Christian Science has been found to heal not only physical disease, but relationship issues, unhappiness, unemployment, financial worries, academic problems, and other challenges.
Our Sunday School runs from 11 a.m. to 12 noon in parallel with the Church Service, and welcomes children and young adults up to the age of twenty. Here they learn through questions and answers, based on the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, how to get to know God and how this can help them with their studies, relationships, problems and everyday experiences.
The first lessons are drawn from the Ten Commandments, the Sermon on the Mount and the Lord's Prayer. Older pupils explore the weekly Bible-Lesson and learn how they can apply healing truths in daily life for themselves and others. All pupils are encouraged to turn to God for comfort, assurance, direction and a sense of individual purpose.
